The city of Topeka, Kansas state capital, is located in the northeast part of the state. Sitting downtown among office buildings, shops, and restaurants is the capitol building itself. Standing at the very top of the dome is the figure of a Kanza Indian named Ad Astra (to the stars); from the state motto, "Ad Astra per Aspera", Latin for "To the Stars through Difficulties."

These photos were taken on October 17, 2010 during a major renovation project.

The exterior dome is made up of clay tiles with copper sheeting on the outside while the building itself is made of sandstone from the bluffs along Deer Creek.

In 2002 the 22-foot, 2-inch bronze sculpture of Ad Astra, by Richard Bergen, was added to the top of the dome. The statue received its name from the state motto, Ad Astra per Aspera, “To the stars through difficulty.”

I decided to play with that and removed the other colors from the image. The only colors in this scene were the tops of the meters, the flashing red lights inside, and the reflections in the glass fronts. I saturated colors inside the glass slightly and toned down everything else in the photo to achieve this effect. Now those reflections stand out more, in fact if you look closely enough you can spot the bright green building from the last photo!
